What happens if I clear my browser data?
Your notes are stored exclusively in your browser’s IndexedDB. If you clear site data, cookies, or browser storage, your notes will be permanently deleted from this device. There is no cloud backup.
To protect yourself, use Transfer → Export Full Backup as JSON regularly to download a backup file. You can re-import it at any time using Transfer → Import JSON Backup.
How does Private Transfer work?
Private Transfer is a quick, one-time handoff between your own devices — not ongoing sync. When you share, your notes are locked on this device first, then a short-lived 3-word code is shown. The receiving device scans the QR code or types those 3 words to unlock the notes locally.
The relay never receives your raw 3-word code or your note contents. The transfer expires after 5 minutes and disappears the moment the receiving device downloads it. Sharing creates a copy — your original notes are never removed.
How do I move notes to a new device?
You have several options. Single-note Private Transfer is available to everyone, including Free users.
- Share This Note (Free): Open a note and use the Share action, or go to Transfer → Share This Note.
- JSON Backup (Free): Export all notes as a JSON file, then import it on the new device.
- Share All Notes & Folders (Pro & Max): Go to Transfer → Share All Notes to move everything in one transfer.
Is there a mobile app?
Sulata Note is a Progressive Web App (PWA). On iOS (Safari), tap the Share button and select “Add to Home Screen”. On Android (Chrome), tap the menu and select “Install app”.
What is the difference between Free, Pro, and Max?

Does my Pro or Max license work offline?
Yes. Your license is verified once when you activate it, then stored locally in IndexedDB. Pro and Max features remain fully accessible whether you are online or offline.
How do tags work, and are they free?
Tags are free on every tier. You can add as many as 20 tags to a note from the tag field beside the note title. Tags are saved with the note and travel with it through JSON backups and Private Transfer.
Search looks at tags as well as titles and note text, so typing part of a tag finds every note carrying it — there is no special search syntax to learn.
Why does a note appear in a folder it is not in?
If a note carries a tag that matches a folder’s name, that folder shows the note as a tagged reference under a separate heading, while the note stays exactly where it lives. Nothing is moved and nothing is duplicated.
Each folder shows a breakdown of how many notes it actually holds, how many are tagged references, and the total you can see. Deleting a folder only ever affects the notes it genuinely holds — tagged references are never touched. Renaming a folder never renames your tags.
What is the Vault?
The Vault is a separate private space for Pro and Max, where note titles, content, tags, colour and pinning are encrypted on your device behind one password. It has its own list, its own search, its own transfer, and its own encrypted backup files.

What if I forget my Vault password?
Then the Vault notes cannot be read. Sulata Note cannot recover a forgotten Vault password — there is no reset, no recovery code, and no back door. That is exactly why the Vault is private, and it is why you are asked to confirm you understand before creating one.
Choose a password you will remember, and keep an encrypted Vault backup somewhere safe.
Why do ordinary backups not include my Vault notes?
Because an ordinary JSON backup is a plain, readable file. Putting Vault notes in it would defeat the point of the Vault. Instead the Vault has its own Export Encrypted Vault Backup action, which produces a separate encrypted file that requires your Vault password to open.
Changing your Vault password does not change the password needed by backup files you exported earlier.
Can I send a Vault note to a Free device?
No. Receiving Vault notes requires Pro or Max and an unlocked Vault on the receiving device. If a Vault link is opened on a Free device, or on a device with no Vault, Sulata Note explains what is needed and does not use up the transfer — it stays valid until it expires.
If you want a note to leave the Vault, use Move Out of Vault first. You will be told clearly that it will no longer be encrypted.
What happens to my Vault if my license becomes inactive?
Your Vault is preserved and becomes read-only. You can still unlock it, read your notes, export an encrypted backup, lock it, or delete it. Creating and editing Vault notes, moving notes in or out, and Vault transfers are unavailable until your license is active again. Nothing is deleted because a license lapses.
When does the Vault lock itself?
After 15 minutes without meaningful activity, after the app has been hidden for 5 minutes, and always on reload or browser restart. You can also lock it yourself at any time.
Because the Vault key is only ever held in memory, an edit that has not yet been saved at the moment of locking or reloading cannot be recovered. Sulata Note saves Vault notes quickly and saves immediately when the app goes into the background to keep that window as small as possible.
Why do Vault notes never show up in my folders?
Vault notes are deliberately kept separate from ordinary notes, folders and tags. A note is either an ordinary note or a Vault note, never both, so a Vault note never appears in an ordinary list, folder, tagged-reference section, search result, or ordinary backup.
